Beyond the Boundary of Time

The catalogue "Old Urban Houses Tell Their Stories" begins as documentation. It ends as a message.

The thirteen houses presented on these pages were not chosen at random — they are witnesses to a shared regional world of masters who worked beyond administrative borders, of families who built with ambition and taste, and of towns that entered a new historical era at the same time. The recurring decorative motifs found throughout the region — the vine tendril, the acanthus leaf, and the rosette in the ceiling ornamentation — are no coincidence. They are the material imprint of the same master hands, working from commission to commission, decade after decade. The Debar woodcarving in the ceiling of the Emfiedzhieva House and the carved ceilings in Kriva Palanka and Kratovo resemble one another not by chance — they are the work of the same master lineages, an expression of the same ornamental vocabulary disseminated throughout the entire region. The old urban houses of Kyustendil, Dupnitsa, Kriva Palanka, and Kratovo tell this story vividly and convincingly.
