The house was built in 1922 by Nane Karakostov. The Karakostov family was among the most prominent and wealthy in Dupnitsa of its day, having built considerable influence through large-scale trade and the export of tobacco.
Distinctive features and cultural imprint:
- Literary legacy: The family's historical and social presence was so significant for the region that the Karakostovs are considered the chief prototype for the characters of "Tobacco" (Tyutyun), the iconic Bulgarian novel by Dimitar Dimov.
