On 15 August, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is celebrated in the centre of Kyustendil as the Cultural Forum Panagia, or "Rising of the Bread". Organised by the Municipality of Kyustendil and the local church, the day blends liturgical chanting and church bells with a display of breads and bakeries. Pilgrims, tourists, residents, cultural clubs and craftsmen gather for a celebration of faith, tradition and gastronomy.
